What was Prussia?

In blue colour, the Kingdom of Prussia at its greatest extent in 1876

Today some of you have asked about Prussia several times. Here you have a map where you will be able to learn its location in the past. Prussia was one of the most powerful German states and it had a very important role in the unification of Germany in the 19th century. We´ll study this in Unit 4. As a consequence of the two World Wars its former territories are distributed between Germany, Poland, Denmark, Russia and Lithuania at present.

Here you have a map of Central Europe, where you can see which countries the former Prussian territories belong to now:

Yes, Manuel. During the lesson I´ve told you that Prussia occupied territories of present Germany and Poland, but on the post I´ve added other present countries that have territories that belonged to Prussia (19th century) when it reached its maximum extent. In the 18th century Prussia was smaller. We´ll learn more about Prussia when we study the unification of Germany. This State led the unification process and the unification was reached after three wars (against Denmark, Austria and France). The last war was one of the causes of World War 1.

Here you have some more information about thr reforms made by Frederick II of Prussia as an enlightened monarch:

Voltaire was one of his best friends for more than 50 years, although they had periods of enmity.

One thing about grammar: if you say bigger, you don´t need to write more before. More bigger is incorrect.

Have a good night!

Thanks for this information. This morning it has been a completely mess because anyone knew what prussia was!
Thank you very much!

I don´t agree with you, Laura. The mess was because many of you don´t listen when I´m explaining things. You talk and talk and you don´t pay the necessary attention. I explained the same at least three times during the lesson. I hope it´s clearer now.

Yes that's the reason, I didn't express well myself.
