Hello classmates!
Today in social sciences we have done several things. First I have gone to Paqui's table to justify an absence. Today we have finished with the Baroque art.
Paqui has said the last day we were watching different concepts of beauty, all the details about the paintings of Rembrandt. This morning Paqui looking information about "Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" of Rembrandt. We have talked about it that in this painting the doctor (surgeon) is doing an autopsy to this body and the people around were seen to them, that were a group of people of the same proffession.  Autopsies in this period were done in theatres room because they were public. The corpse belonged to a hung criminal. The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, tells that was the type of society there was in this period.

-The Night Watch (La ronda de noche),Rembrandt This name aren't the real name of this photo, the real name is "The Company of captain Frans Banning Cocq and lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch preparing to march out", you can see the puppet, the painting is also a portrait. All the people paid to appear in the painting.

-Syndics of the Drapers' Guild, Rembrandt

-The Slaughtered Ox, Rembrandt

-The Lacemaker, Vermeer
The Lacemaker the woman is making lace

-Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, Vermeer.

This is the typical painting with the window and the ligh pass through of them.

-The Milkmaid, Vermeer
The Milkmaid:  this was the Dutch favourite painting.

-Girl with a Pearl Earring, Vermeer

-Allegory of the Art of Painting, Vermeer

-The Geographer, Vermeer

Paqui has  taught the painting of  "The Menines", "The Guernica" and "Venus with a Mirror" in the new decoration of the class made by Paqui and Mari Carmen Lázaro, and she has said that these paintings have different opinions.

All these paintings represent the light of the atmosphere. We have compared all these paintings with the paintings of Caravaggio (that are more religious) Flander's paintings...etc.

With this information we have finished the Baroque Art.

Paqui has started a new powerpoint presentation about "The Iberian Peninsula in the 16th and 17th century" :

After we have started a new point called: " The Iberian Peninsula in the  16th and 17th century" and we have remembered the 16th century in the Iberian Peninsula, the Hispanic Empire that we studied in 2º E.S.O. and about the Catholic Monarch (Isabella and Fernando and the song of Tanto Monta Monta Tanto). Paqui has said that there is a TV series of Isabella, we have remembered that the different territories that Aragón and Castile. They have five childrens but the heir and the only survivor was Joana the Mad (Juana la Loca) and she was married with Philip the Handsome ( Felipe el hermoso) and they have a son that was Charles I that heir of a inmense empire. Today we have started with the events that happened during the reign of the Charles I, Philip II, Philip III, Philip IV and Charles III.
3.-The Iberian Peninsula in the 16th and 17th century.

-16th century: SPLENDOUR OF THE HISPANIC MONARCHY

*Charles I (V in the Holy Roman Empire)
     *Philip II

-17th century: DECLINE OF THE HISPANIC MONARCHY

     *Philip III
     *Philip IV
     *Charles III

And Paqui has explained that Charles II was mentally and phisically disabled (Luis has said that one person of the class are disabled, all the class have laughed) and Paqui has showed some photo of Charles I (he was very ugly).

This happened because their ancestors have sons with members of the same family.  He didn't talk properly till he was 4 years old and he didn't walk well since he was 8 years old. At least Charles I tried to rule because his father and his grandfather had other preferences (women, party...).

Paqui has showed some pictures of the royal family and she has said that they were dressedin black because it was the period of "The Counter Reformation" .

We have looked a map about Charles I's heritage where the territories were represent in different colours.

In the finish of the class we have copied a scheme about Charles I that we have to complete with the information of the pages 92 and 93.

The scheme is this:

Charles I :
-Heritage:
*
*
*
*
-Internal problems:
*
*
-Problems in the Empire:
*
*
*
-Sucession:
*
*
---------------------
Today we have learned some new words:

*Hygiene: higiene

*The night watch: La ronda de noche

*Parade: Desfile

*Puppet: Mascota

*Lacemaker: Encajera

*To sew: Coser

*Poll: Encuesta

*Dutch: Holandés

*Joanna the Mad: Juana La Loca

*Philip the Handsome: Felipe el hermoso

*Disabled: discapacitado

*On someone's behalf: En nombre de...

Finally, the bell has rung and Paqui has given us for homework to do a scheme about Charles I with the pages 92-93. Today's class has been noisy, we should pay more attention.

Have a nice day!!

See you tomorrow :)

Hello Maribel!
Your journal is perfect; I havent't seen any important mistakes. You complete it with a lot of drawings, but some of theme, for example The Lacemaker of Vermeer seems to be blurry.
Congratulations for the journal;
See you tomorrow!

Hello Maribel!
I have to tell you some things:
-You have written: (first paragraph) the doctor (surgeon) is doing an autopsy to this body and the people around were SEEN to THEM. I think this is not correct, the people were SEEING to the AUTOPSY but maybe I have confused.
-You have used the verb teach in various occassions but I think that is better use the verb SHOW
I have asked Paqui about Charles I and she has said that he didn't talk well since he was 4 years old and he didn't walk well since he was 8 years old. At least Charles I tried to ruled because his father and his grandfather had other preferences (women, party...).
Only this Maribel. Execelent work, continue in this way.
I hope to do a journal as well as you.
See you tomorrow!

Hello everyone,
This year I am going to join your blog to make comments, most of them related to grammar and vocabulary. Please, do not hate me because of that, you know it is my job. I won't be saying nice things most of the time, but my intention if for you to improve(or remember!!!!) your grammar. Just some quick comments to start, Maribel:
- First line, first mistake: thinks instead of things. You shouldn't be making such basic mistakes by now.
- The past participle of "teach" is "taught". It is irregular.
I think the problem with you( I mean, the group in general)is that you don't revise basic grammar anymore. You have the feeling that you know it all, but it is necessary to revise. If you don't, you will continue making those mistakes and it is bad for your level of English.
On the other hand, leaving grammar behind, your presentation, the paintings you use as examples are great. Don't let your grammar mistakes destroy all that.

Hi Classmates !!
Maribel your journal is really complete, congratulations. I have seen one little mistake:
- Paqui has said that THERE ARE a serie in the TV of Isabella: I think that the correct form is THERE IS because a serie is singular.
I like the presentation of your journal, it's very nice. See you !!

Hello Classmates!

Maribel, your journal is very completed and interesting but the names of the paintings have to be in Italic font and all the words in capital letters, except for the prepositions and articles. I had this verdict the last day in my journal. I havent't seen any more gramatical mistakes. I like your journal, congratulations.

See you tomorrow.

Hello Maribel,

Just one thing for now: you can't change the predetermined font or the style of the post. You have to use the font everybody uses and don't use the bold font (negrita). I changed this yesterday, but you've changed it again.

I´ll come back later for the mistakes about the contents, because Cristina is going to help us with the grammar this year. So, pay attention to her corrections!

Hello again,

These are my last corrections:

As Siria has said to you, you have to write names of the paintings in Italic font and all the words in capital letters, except for the prepositions and articles. For example: The Meninas

And these are my comments about the contents:

- I looked for the real name of The Night Watch, because it's too long and I didn't remember it exactly

- Rembrandt's paintings tell us a lot about the society of the Low Countries, a bourgeois society and not so worried about religion. That's why there were many collective portraits: people had money to pay to appear on a painting with their friends or colleagues. And the same happens with Vermeer's paintings: they show us the interiors of bourgeois houses with people doing common activities, like reading, sewing, cooking... That's what I said when I talked about society in the Low Countries and the differences of these paintings with the Italian ones.

- The Night Watch is a day scene, but the painting was so dirty that people thought it was a night scene. Here you have a link where you can read after its restoration and the different appearence it has now:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2053923/Rembrandts-famous-Night-Watch-sees-light-day-multi-million-museum-revamp.html

- On The Lacemaker the woman is making lace (encaje)

- As for The Milmaid, I said that this was the Dutch favourite painting. They made a poll in Holland and this is the painting people prefer there. That's why we talked about what we think would be the Spaniards' favourite painting. Luis said that he thinks that people would choose The Meninas and other people talked about other paintings, like The Third of May by Goya or the Guernika by Picasso or Veus at Her Mirror. Every person had different opinions about their favourite paintings.

- This sentence: Today we have (studied) started with the events that happened during the reign of the Charles I, Philip II, Philip III, Philip IV and Charles III.

- At least Charles II tried to rule(d)

- has (explained some schemes) showed some pictures of the royal family and she has said that they were dressed in black because it was the period of "The Counter Reformation"

-...a scheme about Charles I that we have to complete(d)

That's all for the moment. I suppose Cristina is going to correct some grammar and spelling mistakes that last, but you have done a good work. Good night!

Hello Maribel:
As I told you, I am going to be in charge of the grammar. If any of you don't understand any of my explanations, please, let me know.
Here are some more corrections.
- The people around the corpse(cadáver) were lloking at him. Related to what you said about theatres and autopsy, "quirófano" in English is "theatre room".
- Society WAS(singular). Pay attention to singular and plural because you make a big amount of mistakes due to that, e.g, childrenSSSS
- Another problem that I often see: Sometimes a verb must be followed by another verb. This second verb is usually an infinitive, with or without "to" or an -ing form. The problem is that, if you have to write the verb in the past, you write both verbs in the past or the second one and this is wrong. You wrote: All the people pay to appeared(Todo el mundo pagó para aparecer). This is what you must do: ONLY write the past of THE FIRST VERB: All the people PAID to appear.
- "series" is singular, but it is written with a final -s(this comment is for Angela too) It is NOT "serie" , singular, "series" plural. It is just a singular word, so you should say " there is a TV series, there is a series on TV.
- "Hasta" is "till" or "until": He didn't speak properly TILL....
I think this is enough for today. I loved your choice of paintings and enjoyed your explanations a lot.

Hello Cristina and Paqui!
Thanks about the corrections! One thing Paqui, you have written "The Milmaid" and the correct form is "The Milkmaid" and Cristina, you have written "lloking" and the correct form is "looking"
Bye! See you the next day!
