28th May 2012

Today some of the class had gone on a trip of biology, so we were almost the half of the class more or less. We have started with Paqui who has explained on a power point the crisis, at first she has shown a slide about prosperity and consumer society another about the other face of prosperity in which Paqui has said that everyone could have what they wanted because everything was paid by installment, after this we have seen a slide in which it was Charles Chaplin with his character Charlot and he represented a tramp, after this one we have seen another of the prohibition of the alcohol from 1919 to 1933 it was prohibited to produce, sell or consume alcoholic drinks.
During this prohibition of alcohol the mafia of the USA made speakeasy which were ilegal bars, Al Capone  was an important ganster of this period, I asked Paqui of how he was arrested and she told me that he was detenied for his tax evasion not his ilegal activities.
Another slide was about Ku Klux Klan, which was a racist organization who hounded other races people, especially black people.
Then Paqui has put another power point about a scheme of the origin of the crisis in which were the expressions: Financial bubble which in spanish is  burbuja financiera and real estate bubble which in spanish is burbuja inmobiliaria and afther this Paqui has said that football pools is la quiniela in spanish.
Paqui has explained the crisis with people from the class: Dani, Ana Isabel, Bea Antequera, Andrea and Angel were the chosen ones.
After this we have participated in a fire drill and then we have finished of copying the first scheme and Paqui has send the second for homework and exercises 4 and 5 from this unit too. Today was a moving day. Here you can see the schemes:

Hello Manu!
Here you have my corrections:
When you talk about the Ku Klux Klan, you have written "haunded" and its "hounded".
Remember to write the name of the languages or nationalities is written with capital letter. Such as Spanish in the fourth paragraph.
You have to add another "o" to "football" y the fifth paragraph. And also a "y" to "copying".

Very good journal! All the fire drills we have are always at Social Sciences period...

Bye!

Hello! Manu good journal. Todays´lesson has been really interesesting. I think that we like more this unit that others because the things that we are learning are closer to us that other ones. I haven´t understood really good the topic about the alcohol, because if they prohibited it, then they wanted to sell more alcohol?
I know that you have missed us, but on Wednesday we are going to be all together, as always! :)

Hello Manuel,

Well done, but correct the mistakes Javi has found. There is one mistake about the content: Al Capone wasn´t a thief, but a gangster. He was called Scarface and was one of the most important mafia men in the USA during the first decades of the 20th century. He was persecuted by Elliot Ness and the Untouchables, but he was finally arrested not for his crimes, but for tax evasion. He had an important role in Saint Valentine´s Massacre, which is the beginning of a very famous and funny film called Some like it hot. Ángel has remembered this film when we have talked about the prohibition.

Here you have more information about Capone:

http://www.chicagohs.org/history/capone.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Valentine%27s_Day_Massacre

You could include somenthing else about him. And don´t forget the tiltle for your post.

Have a good night.

Hello Rebeca,

The government forbade the production, sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks. They didn´t want that anyone produced, bought, sold or consumed alcohol. It was forbidden. But, as it was illegal, many people started selling it in the black market, at higher prices, in illegal places called speakeasies. And this was a very important factor which contributed to the growth of mafia: they became richer and influential. And consumption didn´t decrease. It grew. That´s why the prohibition was abolished in 1933.

Good journal Manu...!!
But I think you have many mistakes like: spanish in a lower case letter and languages are always written with the first word in capital letter, so, you have to write "Spanish" instead.
And I think in some cases you should write commas.
