18th January 2012

Today in Social Sciences at the beginning of the class some of us have asked Paqui about her foot and she has said to us: "I am"
Then Paqui has said to us that she has left some homework for us on Monday but the guardia teacher hasn't given anything to us.
Later Alejandro has read about the demographic revolution and some of the causes were less wars, hygiene and medicine improved, people were better fed, reduction of mortality rates, a strong population growth and this caused a high demand for all kind of products.
Paqui has explained us the origin of vaccines that consists of taking the liquid of a bubo and this liquid was introduced in some children and these children become inmunes. This vaccine was discovered by Edward Jenner.
Then Paqui has a shown us a graphic the birth and mortality rates and we have been talking about the life expentacy and Paqui has said us that the life expectancy of Spain is about 84 years.
After that Mª Luz has read about agricultural revolution that consists of innovations to produce more, some of them were:
- Many communal lands were enclosed, to explain this Paqui has used Rebeca and Silvia
- Introduction of the Norfolk four-field system crop rotation that was a system that didn't leave any part fallow.Every year the position of the crops change, and rotate. In one part they cultivated clover in other wheat, in other barley and in the other turnips.
- Selective breeding
All these changes led to an increase of production and a surplus of farmers.

Some new words that we have learned today have been:
-smallpox that means viruela
-bubo that means ampolla
-enclosure that means cercamiento
-graze that means pastar
-manure that means estiercol
-straw that means paja
-flour that means harina
-iron plough that means arado de hierro
-seed drill that means sembradora mecánica
-thresing machine that means trilladora
-clover that means trébol
-turnip that means nabo
-barley that means cebada
-milkmade that means lechera
-antibody that means anticuerpo

Finally a fire alarm has rung and we have to go out of the high school because it was a fire drill.
That was all for today bye see you tomorrow

Hello Diego! These are the mistakes I have found:

3rd line: "Then Paqui has said to us that she left some homework for us..." Because that was on Monday, you should write this in past tense.

And at the end: "Finally a fire alarm has rung and we have gone out of the high school because it was a fire drill." I'm not sure on this but I think it's not good in the way you have written it.

About the picture, you don't have to copy and paste the link from Google, you have to enter the page of the picture and copy it here.

Good work! Bye!

Hi Diego, I've found some more mistakes:
- Later Alejandro HAS read about...
- Paqui has explained us... (I think you should eliminate the word "to", but I'm not sure, we should ask Paqui).
- The word children is already in plural, it's the plural of child, so you can't say "childrens", just children.
- ... this liquid was INTRODUCED (I think it's better expressed in this way).
And there are also more words we have learnt or remembered today:
- Flour: harina
- Iron plough: arado de hierro
- Seed drill: sembradora mecánica
- Thresing machine: trilladora
- Clover: trébol
- Turnip: nabo
- Barley: cebada
- Milkmade: lechera
- Antibody: anticuerpo
We knew many of these words from last year, but we have remembered them because we had forgotten them.
That's all Diego, see you tomorrow!

Hi Diego! I think that you can add some more things, for example:Edward Jenner discovered the vaccine for smallpox. You can say that Paqui has showed us a graphic about comparing the birth and the death rates. Afterward we have been talking about the life expectancy in every period of the history. Paqui has explained the common land and the enclousures with Silvia and me. Finally you can explain more things about the Norfolk-four-field system of crop rotation. Every year the position of the crops change, and rotate. In one part they cultivated clover in other ryegrass, and so on. I think that if you find a picture about that system will be better.
See you

Hello everybody,

Most of your corrections are good. I would say "inoculate", instead of ·introduce" a vaccine. I recommend you to read the answers to last week´s challenge. There is really curious information there and you will be able to learn more about the history of medicine and the agricultural revolution.

I also want to tell you that I will be absent at least until the 6th February. I´m on sick leave for at least two weeks. I have a plaster splint on my leg and I have to rest. Cristina Blanco will cover my Thursday´s lessons. I will give her material and exercises to do. The rest of the days of class (Mondays and Wednesdays) you will be with the "guardia" teacher. I will write what you have to do on the blog every Sunday. Please read it and do the work. If you have any questions or doubts, please use the blog to ask me. I´ll try to include some extra explanations about the more difficult sections. Please do the classwork and also the homework. I will also include here the name of the students in charge of writing everyday´s journal.

As for the make-up exam, Cristina Blanco will talk to you tomorrow.

I hope to see you soon. Bye.

hello everybody!! Good journal diego!! It's a pity that yesterday in the classroom Paqui couldn't stand up. But anyway it has been a good class. The problem has been that as Paqui made the effort to come to the class now the Paqui's food is in a cast.
So Paqui rest to come as a new Paqui when the doctor tells you.

Bye bye.

Diego, you can't say "you have reason", the right way to say that is "you are right".
