Summerhill, one example of anarchist school

summerhill school

Here you have some links about Summerhill, a British boarding school based on the principles of educating children in complete freedom. It was founded by Alexander S. Neill in 1921. Students choose what they want to do and learn. The fees are really expensive: from £8,568 to £14,889 per year, depending on the level (from 11,075 to 19.246 € per year).

This is the school website:

And here you have some links in English and Spanish:

I think it's amazing!! It is a good way of educating children because they learn what they want, when they want and nobody can say them they aren't right. But the best thing is that they learn to be responsibles.
Money, I need you because I want to go there!! (and bye bye Maths)

I think this is a good idea, but what I don't like is the fact that all these alternative schools are private and only for an elite. If they were really anarchist, they would try to extend this model in a different way. What we have to do is try to introduce this type of innovations in the public schools (financed by the State). Remember that in the UK, "public" school means "private school" in fact. Education is a right and everybody should have access to the best models and innovations, no matter their incomes.

Have a nice weekend!
