Thursday, 13th November 2014

Hello everyone, I'm Fran.

Today in the class of Social Sciences, the first thing we have done has been to copy the index of the new unit, and finally to start with the book of 4th of E.S.O.
The index of the new unit is:

   1) The Ancien Regime.
   2) Enlightenment.
   3) Politics in the 18th century:
          a) Enlightened Depotism.
          b) The 13 colonies of North America on the Independence of the USA.
   4) Spain in the 18th century:
          a) War of Spanish Sucession and the Treaty of Utrecht ( 1700-1714)
          b) Centralized Absolutism: Philip V and Ferdinand VI's reigns.
          c) The Enlightened Reformism of Chales III's reing.

After that Paqui has started to showing us the powerpoint of Baroque Art because she wanted to finish it, to start with the book of 4th of E.S.O and with the new unit.
In today's class to finish with the PowerPoint presentation of Baroque painting, we have focused on Velázquez  as he was the most important painter of Baroque Art, and also Paqui has showed us his most important paintings. To start with the explanation Paqui has started saying that Velázquez focused his paintings in a special way: he painted the most important people in the background and the other people who weren't so important in the foreground.
After this explanation she has shown us some of his paintings:
-The Surrender of Breda, and Paqui has analyzed it a little bit  and she has said to us some details.
-Equestian portraits of Count-Duke of Olivares, Philip III...
-Baltasar Carlos on a horse, in this painting Nuria has asked Paqui why he painted the horse so
fat and Paqui has said to her that Velázquez painted the horse like that because this painting was
placed on the top of a door and when the people saw this painting it created an optical
illusion and the horse seems to be thin and strong.
-Pope Innocent's portrait (1650), this painting was almost perfect and the Pope became angry because it was too realistic.
To finish with the PowerPoint presentation Paqui has shown us the two most famous paintings of Velazquez:
    - Philip IV's family or the Meninas (1656), here Velazquez also used the trick of painting the most
important people at the background and the less important in the foreground ahead. Paqui also has said that this   painting was corrected by Velázquez when he became member of the order of Santiago, because he wanted to show the nobility of his work
-The Fable of Arachne or the Spinners (1657), due to this painting Paqui has explained the Fable
     of Arachne.
The two last paintings of Velázquez were.
    -Portraits of Infanta Margarita.
Then we have started the new unit and we have read it on the book. Also Paqui has explained us the organization of the society in the 18th century and also the distribution of the powers in the 18th century.
To finish with the class Paqui has given to us some homework: we have to read Enlightenment (point two in our index or the point 3 in the book) and to write all the new words we will see on the glossary.
Like all the days we have written on the glossary some new words:
      -The Spinners: Las Hilanderas.
      -Probe: Sonda.
-Trade: Oficio (in the context we have read it)
      -Craft: Artesanía.
      -Tapestry: Tapiz.
      -Spinning Wheel: Rueca.
      -Yield: Rendimiento.
      -Tithe:Diezmo.

Philip IV's family.

 The Fable of Arachre.

Hello Fran,

You haven’t made many mistakes and your journal is very complete. These are my corrections:

-Explanation (you’ve written it in a wrong way several times)

-Velázquez has to be written with accent

-and the other people who weren't so important in the foreground

-The Surrender of Breda, and Paqui has analyzed it a little bit

-Baltasar Carlos on a horse (...) has said to her that Velázquez painted the horse like that because this painting was
placed/hung on the top of a doorl and when the people saw this painting it created an optical illusion and the horse seems to be thin and strong.

-Pope Innocent’s portrait (1650), this painting was almost perfect and the Pope became angry because it was too realistic.

-To finish with the PowerPoint presentation...

- ... used the trick of painting the most important people in the background and the less important in the foreground ahead. (...) this painting was corrected by Velázquez when he became member of the order of Santiago, because he wanted to show the nobility of his work Remember that he considered himself as an artist and not as a craftsman.

-The Fable of Arachne or the Spinners (1657), due to this painting Paqui has explained the Fable of Arachne.
