3rd of June of 2011

When we arrive to the class the computer was starting on and until it works ok we have been reviewing about the last class, it was about Renaissance art.

Then we have continued explaining the painting in Renaissance and about the perspective, because it was starting to use in these period.

After we have read the information in the book about the Renaissance art in the Spanish kingdoms.

At the end of the class she has given each student a card with a Renaissance painting of the Renaissance period. They are to do a project in which each one of us have a painting, and we have to look for information about it and write a text about the painting we have.
The painting I have to do for these project is "School of Athens Rafael". I think it is an interesting painting and I am happy about it.

I'm very sorry by the delay, but I couldn't write it before because my mother forgot her computer on the school where she works, and when I went to the library they say to me: "If you are less than 16 years old you can't use the computers." And now I'm in Ana Lucas' house. Becouse I tell she my problem and she said that I can go her house to write the journal. I'm very sorry really!

Some useful links for your art presentations

Here you have some useful advice and a collection of links you can use to prepare your art presentations. Remember that your analysis has to include this information:

- Title of the painting.
- Author
- Chronology
- Information about the person or institution who commissioned the painting.
- Material used to paint it (tempera, oil, watercolour...)
- Description of the painting: what is represented, colours, shapes, use of light...
- Meaning of the painting: symbols used, purpose of the artist...
- Why the painting can be considered a Renaissance work of art
- More interesting information: importance of the painting in art history, influence in other artists...

And these are some useful links you can use for your previous research:

MUSEO DEL PRADO
Click on "Galería on line" and "A fondo" and you will find information about paintings such as Adam and Eve (Albrecht Dürer), The Garden of the Earthly Delights (Hyeronimus Bosch), Emperor Charles V at Mühlberg and Danae and the shower of gold (Titian).

MUSÉE DU LOUVRE
Here you will find information about some Leonardo Da Vinci´s paintings: Saint John the Baptist, The Gioconda (Mona Lisa) and The Virgin of the Rocks. Write the name of your paintings on the search box to have access to the information you need:

RAFAEL SANZIO
Here you have some links to prepare the presentations on Rafael´s paintings:

Frescoes on the Vatican Rooms, such as The Parnassus and The School of Athens:

LEONARDO DA VINCI
Here you have a link to all Leonardo Da Vinci´s paintings:

BOTTICELLI

GIORGIONE

HANS HOLBEIN

Remember that you have to understand the information you´re going to present to the others. It would be better that you look for the information in Spanish first, prepare a scheme and organize what you´re going to explain. When you have all this, you can start preparing your composition in English. You can use links in English for the specific vocabulary, but don´t fall into them temptation of copying and pasting things you don´t understand. Your explanation doesn´t have to be long. The purposes of this project are that you learn about Renaissance style, the complexity of some works of art and that you explain your discoveries to other people. Use simple and understandable sentences and write your own explanation. The information you get is only the first part of the project. With it, you will have to elaborate your own analysis.

Remember that the deadline for this project is on the 13th June. If you have any questions or doubts, please contact by e-mail.

Virtual tour to Saint Peter´s Basilica

This is another interesting link you can use to make a virtual tour of Saint Peter´s Basilica in the Vatican. As we have studied, four architects contributed to its design (Bramante, Rafael, Michelangelo and Maderno). In the 17th century Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square in Baroque style and he was also responsible for the baldachin of the altar of the Basilica.

Click on number 2 to watch the altar and the dome designed by Michelangelo and click on number 7 if you want to see the sculpture of  The Pietà

The Sistine Chapel as if you were there

Here you have an impressive link to visit the Sistine Chapel and enjoy all its details as if you were there. You can use the mouse to move to the different parts of Michelangelo´s frescoes. Use the zoom and and enjoy!

Challenge number 21

This week´s research will consist in discovering some curiosities about one of the most important Renaissance´s works of art: The last Judgement, painted by Michelangelo Buonarrotti on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in theVatican. Michelangelo needed four years to complete this fresco, from 1537 to 1541.

The Sistine Chapel was restored in the 1980´s and 1990´s. The restorers tried to show Michelangelo´s paintings as he had conceived them, but there are some additions on this fresco Michelangelo didn´t like. Here you have the questions:

QUESTION 1
Why was The last Judgement considered to be a scandalous painting?

QUESTION 2
The following figure is located on the low right side of the painting, in hell´s part. It represents Minos, one of the three judges of the underworld. He´s represented with donkey ears and wrapped in coiled snakes. Michelangelo used a real model to paint this figure. Who was represented as Minos? Why?

QUESTION 3
The following figure represents Saint Bartholomew with a flayed skin. Who did Michelangelo use as model to paint Saint Bartholomew? Whose face is represented in the flayed skin?

QUESTION 4
After the Council of Trent some important alterations were made on The Last Judgement. What changes were made in it and why? What painter was in charge of making these changes? What does his nickname mean?

One last curiosity: Michelangelo also painted two beloved persons on The Last Judgement. On the left side of the picture above the woman below the Virgin is Vittoria Colonna, one of Michelangelo´s best friends. He dedicated her a lot of poems and she was considered to be his Platonic love. Michelangelo also painted Tomasso dei Cavalieri, the man he loved the most. He was probably the model Michelangelo used for the Christ of The Last Judgement and he also painted him behind Saint Bartholomew´s figure. Michelangelo also dedicated Tommaso dei Cavalieri more than 300 hundred poems.

If you want to observe The Last Judgement with more detail, you can use the following link. It belongs to the Vatican Museums. On the left side of the screen you have a magnifying glass that you can use to enlarge the  different parts of the image:

Why did Moses have horns?

The Moses is one of the most famous Michelangelo Buonarrotti´s sculptures. Michelangelo sculpted it as part of Pope Julius II tomb. It´s an impressive marble sculpture located in the small church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome, the church of the Della Rovere family. Michelangelo considered the Moses to be his most life-like creation and there is a legend that says that when he finished it, he struck the statue´s knee and said " Now speak!".

But one of the most shocking aspects of the Moses is that the prophet seems to have horns. This was the common way of representing Moses in iconography, but the origin of this representation lies on a translation mistake. Saint Jerome, the translator of the Bible from Hebrew to Latin, made a mistake. When he translated the paragraph that explains the moment when Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he made a mistake with the word karan, which can mean "brightness" and also "horn" in Hebrew. The context of this story of the Bible suggests that Moses´s head was surrounded by some kind of halo, but Saint Jerome wrote "horns" instead of "halo" and this conditioned many further representations of Moses in art history.

1st OF JUNE

Yesterday in social sciences we saw a powerpoint with pictures, while, Paqui explained us each picture wich the differents types of architecture, sculpture and painting. First, someone read the architecture and Paqui drew on the blackboard architectural elements with some names, for example, pediment, triglyph, metope and frieze.

Then, MºLuz read sculpture, one of the examples that Paqui showed us was of Michelangelo and after of this I read painting, the names of the painting was very difficult for me because the names are mixed of english and Italy. We also learnt new words.

Paqui scolded with us because we spoke a lot and she said that we will have an exam.

The last year we studied some of this artistic concepts, but review is always a good idea.

The majority of the architects are interesting, for example ,the basilica of Saint Peter ,that it was built by three or four architects, at the time the most famous was Michelangelo (above this text there is a photo of Saint´s Peter Basilica in Vatican. Paqui give us homework: read the appendix. Some examples of paintings are: Virgin of the Rocks, Tribute Money, The School of Athens.

Sorry but I couldn´t write before.
