Monday 18th May, 2015

Hello everybody!!!

Today, the beginning of our Social Sciences lesson has consisted in the continuation of the point "D" of the Russian Revolutions, which is called Stalinism. The last day, we studied the "Lennin's Succesion" and today we have studied how the government of Stalin was like:

The economy in Stalin's government had the following characteristics:
-Collectivization: everything became State property.
-Planification: Centrally Planned Economy through the Five Years Plan and priority of heavy  industry to the detriment of light industry and consumer goods.

We've also learned this: propaganda was used to exalt or present Stalin as the father the savior of the USSR. This is the cult of Stalin's personality.

The most interesting thing was the repression of the opossition, another important feature of Stalinism:
-All the people who were suspected of critizicing or opposing the Communist Party were arrested and in many cases executed or sent to the GULAG.
-Stalinist Purges: in the 1930s around 700,000 people were executed.

After the explanation of Stalinism and finishing the unit, Paqui has given us the Art projects. I've had an 8!! I'm so happy with my mark and everybody has had very good marks, and we've enjoyed a lot doing the projects. Tomorrow we have the exam, I'm so nervous.

Byeeee!!

08 May 2015 (friday)

Hello everybody! It’s Amalia.
I’m going to tell you what I have done today in social sciences lesson.
At first some students have asked to Paqui if we could watch a video that they have made in French lesson and she accepted.

Then we have corrected some activities sent for today, they where about tsarist Russia and the  1905 revolution:

The main features of Tsarist Russia were  the following:

-At the beginning it was an autocracy
-Tsar Nicholas II concentrated a lot of power
-Political parties were forbidden and peasants were most of the population
-only in some cities were some industries and workers
-Some parties appeared: constitutional democrat party (liberal ideology)Russian social democratic party (Marxist party divided into Mensheviks and Bolsheviks)socialist revolutionary party(defended the rights of peasants)

The first revolution was in 1905 after Russia’s defeat in the Russian-Japanese war and there were strikes and protests

There was a demonstration of workers asking for better conditions which was brutally repressed by the army. The revolt extended to other parts of the country and soviets appeared (council of workers, peasants and soldiers that appeared to organize the revolts they wanted the end of the war and autocracy)

The Tsar promised to make some reforms but he didn’t keep the promises
WW1 was one of the causes of a new revolution in 1917: the constant defeats of the Russian army .This mean a mobilization of peasants because they wanted low prices, more lands and also more food.

We have to make the scheme about 1917 revolution at home and we have to include the causes, the stages that were: February, April, July and August,  and October .And also the consequences of that revolution

Then we have copied a small scheme about the RSDLP and its division into Mensheviks (moderate Marxists, social democrats, they wanted to participate in the elections and institutions. They were the majority until October 1917) and into Bolsheviks(radical Marxists , revolutionary, they wanted to take the state and to impose the dictatorship of the proletariat. They were minority until October 1917)

At the end of the lesson Paqui has told us that if we wanted to see an exposition about mauthausen, she will be there .I  have seen the exposition and I like it.

7th May 2015 (Thursday)

Today we have been around 10 minutes late to the Social Sciences lesson because the students from 2nd of Bachillerato were taking an exam. When we have started the lesson at least, we have started learning about the Russian revolutions, which is the second point in this unit.

At the beginning of the 20th century Russia was an autocracy ruled by tzars. Tsar Nicolas II concentrated a lot of power, prohibbited political parties and peasants werte the majority of the population.Only in cities like Moscow or Saint Petersburg there were some industries and workers. Some parties appeared: the Constitutional Democrat Party, of liberal ideology; de Social-Democratic Labour Party,a Marxist party; and the Socialist Revolutionary Party, defending the peasants' rights.

There were several Russian revolutions before, during and after World War I. Today we have studied the one of 1905 and a little bit of the Bolshevik Revolution.

  • In 1905 there was a first Russian revolution with demonstrations and protests, because the tsar didn't keep the promises he had made in the Constitution about making reforms.

  • There was another revolution in Russia in 1917: the Bolshevik Revolution. The defeats of Russian army, hunger, mobilization and protests of peasants and workers let to the creation of Soviets (councils of workers, peasants and soldiers to put an end to the war and to autocracy). In February, tsar Nicolas II abdicated and a democratic Republic was declared. They created a provisional government presided by Kerensky. This government decided to continue with the war and to make reforms to transform Russia into a democracy.

In addition, we have learnt some new concepts, such as "backwarded" (atrasado), "demonstration" (manifestación), "to put the blame on someone" (culpar a alguien) and "desertation" (deserción).

At the end of the class Paqui has given us some questions to complete all this Russian Revolution thing, and I guess we'll correct them tomorrow:
1.- Explain the main features of Tsarist Russia.
2.- Explain what happened in 1905 and its consequences.
3.- What was a Soviet?
4.- Explain what happened to Russia during World War I.
