JOURNAL 22/02/2013

Hello everybody!!!

Today during the break time, some people have been talking with Paqui about the projects. When the bell has rung all the people have come to the class and started asking her about the projects at the same time and I haven't been able to listen anything. Paqui has said that the next unit is short.
After we have reviewed what we studied last day about the new class-based society:
-High bourgeoisie
-Middle bourgeoisie
-Petty bourgeoisie
-Proletariat/workers
Later, we have seen some images about the working and living conditions of workers during the Industrial Revolution, the conditions were very dreadful. People were very tired and they didn't rest so they were vulnerable to illnesses (the workers used to work between 12 and 16 hours a day and they could only rest one day per week)

                                                                  Working conditions             https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDS10GHgeatNyhHSBBFKN1NLuX-ahgjHjF4bm8SsT7qHEZDZsZ_wKWsdRq-G96lOhR2To81dJ2vc4EIXfnRuvRoCRtaydexvFu0LxySlyGAIPjkivEgSGnMpIjMtLAYL4gssJGeN1ihdU/s1600/FOTO+3+CHICAGO+1886.jpg

After this we have started the 3rd point of the unit about the Labour Movement:
-First protests:Luddism
  Workers destroyed the machines, because they considered them responsible for their bad working conditions.  Captain Ned Ludd  was an imaginary figure invented by the workers who signed the threat letters to the factories' owners.
Luddism

-Class consciusness
  Living and working together made the workers become aware of their situation and start organizing   themselves to improve their working conditions.
-First workers' association
  Mutual Benefit Societies: they helped workers in case of illness or unemployment. Workers paid monthly fees to cover these situations. Trade Unions: Associations of workers of the same profession (trade) created to improve the working conditions of their members. Declared illegal until the Combination Acts (1824). The Tolpuddle martys (1632) were condemned because they created a farmers' union.
Trade unions

-Chartist movement
 Political movement that demanded political rights for the workers. They presented a chart to the Parliament of the UK with their demands. They didn't get what they wanted.

Paqui has said that if you don't protest what is unfair you won't change nothing. And she also has read a quote from an image, "Class consciousness is knowing which side of the fence you're on".
She has explained that Australia was like a prison to the United Kingdom's citizens because the most dangerous people were sent there.
At the end Paqui has said that for homework we have to do exercise 12.

Glossary:
-civil servant -> funcionario
-servant -> sirviente
-clerk -> oficinista
-dreadful -> horrible
-Luddism -> ludismo
-put the blame on / blame -> echar la culpa / culpar
-sentenced to death -> sentenciado a muerte
-class consciousness -> conciencia de clase
-to bother -> molestar
-fence -> valla
-Mutual Benefit Societies -> Sociedades de socorros mutuos

Hi Gzú!!
I think your journal is very good and your glossary too, but there are so many mistakes like 2013 not 2012 and the two seen after the class society. You have also to put more information.
And that´s all.
Bye Gzú!!

Hi Jesús!!!!!!,
Your journal is very complete but a little short. It has a very big mistake, do you know in what year are we?. We are in 2013 not in 2012.
But there are other mistakes like unemployment not in employment.
That's all, bye GZÚ!!!!!!!!

Hi Jesús !!!
Your journal is very good but you have some mistakes:
-In the nineth line you have written "Later, we have seen seen ... "
-In the last paragraph of the journal you have written prison in state of prision.
The rest of the journal is very complete !!
ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND AND SEE YOU ON MONDAY !!

Hi Jesús,

I like your journal but I have found some mistakes:
-The bell rang -> the bell has rung.
-I couldn't listen -> I haven't could listen.
-Class consciusness -> Class consciOuness.
-employment (Mutual Benefit Societies) -> unemployment.
-sentenced to death -> condenado a muerte.
-conciencia de clase -> class consciousness.

If you want to add more, you should add that during the Industrial Revolution, workers used to work between 12 to 16 hours a day, and they only rest one day per week.

See you!

Hello Jesús! I like your journal because it is very complete and you haven't got many mistakes. The only one I have founded is:
- And she has also read a quote...
These are my advices:
- You can include more information about the class based society:
The high bourgeoisie was formed by bankers, owners of big industries... You can also include that the their salaries were low, all the members of the family had to work (including children), sometimes workers had to live in shanties without sanitation...
- In Luddism, you can include that the response of the authorities was to sentence the workers involved to death.
- In trade unions you can include that in 1834, The Grand National Consolidated Trades Union included workers of the different professions and that Robert Owen had an important role in this movement.

Hello Jesús!
I really like your journal is very complete. I think my partners have done a very good job with the mistakes but I think I've found one more. In the glossary you have put fense instead of fence.

Hi Gzú
I think Marta has made a mistake because "fense" is OK

Hello everybody,

All the corrections are OK, except Enrique´s correction to Marta. The correct word is "fence". I also think that some students have done very good suggestions to complete your journal

These are my corrections:

- ... I couldn´t listen anything /I haven´t been able to listen to anything "I haven´t could" is incorrect
-... we studied, not "we saw". We can say this in Spanish, but not in English.

-... they could only rest/ rested one day

- factories ´
- monthly fees

-... Parliament of the UK
- ...which side of the fence

I think you have to explain more some things, with complete sentences, including verbs in them. For example: the Chartist movement was the next step in labour movement. Workers became aware of the fact that they didn´t have political influence and...Don´t schematize when you write the journal.

And finally, I don´t agree with Fernando Marcos´comment. I didn´t explain my political ideas in class. I don´t do it ever. When I ask you questions is to make you think. My job is disturbing your nest. I remember that in this lesson Enrique Pérez asked me some questions and I also asked the students some questions to make you think and reach conclusions. I don´t remember what we talked about, but I think it was about class consciousness.

See you!
