Surprise for Paqui by Laura Casero and Raquel Ortiz.

Feminism in Spain

It was between the 19th and 20th centuries.

There are features that makes feminist movement in Spain different from the feminism movements in USA and England. The opinion is still divided between the feminists who praise the existence of a women’s group who were the main figures of the fight for the women’s rights who have been unfairly forgotten, ignored and battered for our history and another majoritary group of historians who stand out the weakness of the Spanish feminist movement and attribute the feminism conquests to reformes motivated reforms by needs of  political imperative more than by a specific feminism pression.

Revolution in 1868, first stage:

In this stage the women was iqual than men “The women should help the men to educate the children”. Some examples of advances are: the Governess’ school which taught psicology, history, etc and it didn’t teach tasks.

Revolution in 1874, second stage:

Free Educational Institution proposed the "woman question" from 1881 with the rise of Sagasta to power. It opens a new education policy that will make a real campaign for the conquest of the rights of women to education and teaching. It materializes in two educational conferences held in Madrid in which intervene with a bright paper Emilia Pardo Bazan and Concepción Arenal.

But the woman was still limited to the performance of administrative and bureaucratic functions philanthropic.

 Concepción Arenal

Emilia Pardo Bazan

Hello girls,

This is a real surprise! But there are some mistakes about the decisions made to improve women´s situation in the 19th century. Even a working woman as Concepción Arenal had a paternalist opinion about the role of women in society. Spain was delayed with respect to other European countries and this had a lot to do with education, as we´ll study. There was not a real feminist movement in Spain until the 20th century and women were not considered equal before the law until the 1931 Constitution, during the Second Republic. Here you have some links to improve your post:

http://www.estelacantabra.com/comenius/SPANISHCENTURY.pdf

http://web.fu-berlin.de/gpo/pdf/tagungen/feminist_de_sotelo.pdf

And this link is in Spanish:

Your initiative has been good. I like people who don´t di things because they are compulsory and want to improve. But you want to improve your mark, tell me what to write on the blog. It´s better that you write about topics related with what we´ve studied recently. For example, Catherine II of Russia would deserve an interesting post as an example of Enlightened Absolutist. You could write about the reforms she made in Russia during her rule and this way you would remember very well the contents we´ve studied today only administrative, economic and educational reforms, but not political or social reforms). Frederick II of Prussia´s life was also very interesting and he is also a very good example of Enlightened despot.

Tomorrow I´ll correct the mistakes of your post. See you!

Good point, Laura! We, teachers , also make mistakes!

- There are features that make feminist movement different from the feminist

- ... women who were the main figures
-... who have been unfairly forgotten, ignored and battered by our history and another group of historians who...feministmovement... feministconquests to reforms motivated by political impreative more than by a specific feminist pressure

- Institución Libre de Enseñanza is Free Insitution of Education in English.

I think that your post mixes the origins of feminism with education for women in Spain. Can you give me the link to the websites from which you extracted this information? There are things I don´t understand well and I would need the original source of information to correct it properly.

Thanks!

Hello Laura,

You should be able to tell me where you extracted this information from. It shouldn´t be difficult to find if you look up for the key words you used to get information from Google.

I´m going to think about different topics about the rest of the unit and I´ll send them to you, so that you can choose one. I´ll do it tomorrow. See you!
