The first general strike in Spain took place in Catalonia in 1855. It is considered to be the first general strike, although it was only in Catalonia, but this was the only industrialized region in Spain at that moment.

It was a tradition that Isabella II started every dancing with her prime minister. On the 10th October 1856, during her birthday party, instead of starting the dancing with her prime minister O´Donnell, Isabella II chose general Narváez to dance a rigaudon. Some days later she dismissed O´Donnell and chose Narváez (moderate) as prime minister. This was the "rigaudon crisis"

Spain intervened in Cochinchina to protect the Spanish missionaries in Indochina. Together with the French, they conquered the South of Indochina, but later Spain renounced to occupy any territory. France started the colonization of Indochina.

General Prim foresaw Napoleon III´s intention of creating a colonial empire for France and decided that Spain shouldn´t be involved in this and leave Mexico.
