24th April

Hi everybody,
Today it’s my turn to do the journal.  As always, many people have arrived late, Carmen, Isa and I too.
When we have arrived, Paloma, Monica, Gonzalo and Andrea were taking the make-up exam. I hope that they’ll pass it.
Paqui has proposed two options because on the day of the exam (28th April) she has a exam with 2ºBachillerato exam and we won't have mor do this day for that she has proposed to us:
  • To do the exam on Monday 28th April, but without the break time because she has the exam of 2ºBachillerato. In this way the last exam would include Unit 7 and unit 8
  • To do the exam on the 8th 10th or 13th of May, but the exam would include Unit 5 + World War First. In this way, the last exam would include The Russian Revolution and the interwar period (Unit 8)

We have decided to do the exam on the 8th OF MAY AND IT WILL INCLUDE UNIT 5 + WORLD WAR FIRST.

After this, we have continued with unit 6.
Paqui has remembered who was the precursor of Impressionism was Édouard Manet, who was a transition painter between Realism and Impressionism.
Many of his paintings were scandalous , for example Olympia.  Olympia was also a scandalous painting because she is looking directly to the viewer and she was a prostitute.

Monet painted Impression, sunrise which gave name to a new style created called Impressionism. The painting was very criticized because the experts said to pose near him and he painted it near him

Impressionist artists tried to capture the moment in their paintings, reflect reality but not as it was, but as they watched it at a specific moment. Painters used loose brush-strokes, fast colour stains, colour dominated over drawing and painted mainly in the open air, not in the studio.

-The main impressionist painter was Claude Monet. Monet was really interested on how light could change a landscape and he made different series of the same theme.

  • Woman with a parasol (He painted only in one sesion)

  • Poppies Blooming: Paqui has told us that maybe Monet said to the couple to stand far first and he painted them far, and then later when he was finishing the painting he said to the couple to  pose near him and he painted near him.

  •  Rouen cathedral , one of his most famous painting.  In the painting, the light changes because each panting was painted at a different time of the day.

Other impressionist painter was  Degas. Degas focused on human figure and movement. He painted scenes of dancers and horse races.  He was one of impressionist painters who painted inside.
  • ·         Dancer with a bouquet of flowers

  •       The tub

  • ·         Horse races

-Pierre-Auguste Renoir, impressionist painter who represented scenes in the open air and was also interested on feminine beauty and sensuality.
  • ·          Dance at the Moulin de la Galette.

-Alfred Sisley was a landscapes painter.
  • ·         Among the vines.

-Camille Pissaro.
  • ·         Boulevard Montmartre at night

-Joaquin Sorolla, who was a Valencian painter.
  • ·         Walk on the beach

And in Impressionist sculpture we have Auguste Rodin. He used multiple grounds to get light effects.
  • ·         The thinker
  • ·         The kiss

·         The gates of Hell: In this sculpture we can see all the sculptures he painted but they are small.

After finishing Impressionism we have started with Neo-Impressionism. In Neo-Impressionism, some painters experienced with compositions made with dots of colour, this technique is called pointillism.

-Georges Seurat: He used pointillism

-Paul Signac
  • ·         Grand Canal, Venice

I love these paintings, they are so beautiful.

And we have started the last thing of this unit, Post-Impressionism. Post-Impressionists painters recovered the importance of drawing and they were not only worried about light and colour, but about expression as well.
-Gaugin was one of the representantives of Cloisonnism (Painting with flat forms separated by dark contours) He spent most of his life in Polynesia, his most famous painting were made there.
  •            Arearea

Paqui has said that she didn’t like Gaugin and after reading a book called The Way to Paradise (El paraíso en la otra esquina) by Mario Vargas Llosa, she hates him because he abandoned his wife and he made awful things.
The Way to Paradise (Published by Mario Vargas Llosa in 2003) is a double biography about Gaugin and his grandmother looking for different paradises.

After this, we have continued with Vicent  Van Gogh. He was a genius with a troubled life.  His paintings reflected his tortured personality: twisted brush-strokes, use of colour…He only sold one painting in his whole life (The red Vineyard)

In the past, his paintings weren't liked by many people. At present, many of his paintings are the most expensive ones in the market, for example: Doctor Gachet’s portrait

-Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, he was a dwarf, he was a painter and lithographer. His favourite themes were cabaret dancers and prostitutes.

·         Dance at the Moulin Rouge.

The words we have learned today are:

-Viewer/Observer->Espectador (In Art)

  2. Hello! I think your journal it is very complete, and I like the photos you have chosen, although I think that you should include a photo of Poppies blooming painting and include what Paqui has said about it (both people in the background. Paqui has said that maybe they were far when we started painting and that they were just in front of him when he finished the painting or that, perhaps, Monet sayed to the couple to stand far first, and that later, they pose near him). These are the mistakes I have found:
    - they'll pass it.
    - proposed to us:
    - because she has the exam of 2º...
    - 8th, 10th or 13th of May....
    - Paqui has remembered that the precursor of Impressionism was Édouard Manet, who was the transition painter between...
    - Olympia was also a scandalous painting because she is looking directly to the viewer.
    - Impression, sunrise is the name of the painting Monet did.
    - as they watched it at a specific moment.
    - After finishing Impressionism...
    - Post-Impressionist painters...
    - she hate him.
    - in art.
    - nenúfares.
    - minusválido.
