Hi! Today is my turn to write the journal!

Today everybody have been late except Miguel, Werse, Ángel Manuel, Enrique Pérez, Jesús Ignacio and I.
First Paqui has done a review of the Friday´s class with a post of the journal. Paqui has explained all the photos of the post and the origin of the Uncle Sam comes from acronym US and is related to be the military. Instead of saying that they received parcels from the government they said by Uncle Sam.

Uncle Sam

And also Paqui has explained the origin of John Bull (John Bull is the personification of the United Kingdom).but I couldn´t understand what Paqui has said because all the people were talking, for example Jose Javier Morales who never shuts up.

After that Paqui has explained some things about  China with the Power Point presentation.
Paqui has explained that China was the most coveted territory, and the Europeans tried to control it. The British provoked two wars: Opium Wars and obliged the Chinese to open their country to the foreigners. But at the end of the 19th century there were some revolts against the foreigners (Boxer´s uprising)

The countrys that want to divided China

Fernando García has said that Spain had colonies in China but Paqui has said that, it wasn´t true. But Fernando is pig-headed and he has continued saying it. But Paqui has said that it is impossible and the next day Fernando will bring the book where he read it.

Enrique Pérez has asked why in this period Spain was sleeping. Paqui has said that because before  Spain was a big Empire, but the country had a lot of internal problems and It lost all the territories little by little.

Then we have continued with China. Paqui has said that there was the  Boxer´s Rebellion was called in this way because many of the participants in the rebellion practiced a martial art similar to taekwondo (including boxing).

Boxer Rebellion

Paqui has said that there is a film about the Boxes' Rebellion called 55 days at Beijing.

The film "55 days in Bejing

After finishing with China I have said that  yesterday it was the Republic Day. Paqui hasn´t wanted to give an opinion about this but she has said that the most important thing is the type of Republic.

Then we have corrected the exercise of the last part of the unit.

Fernando García has corrected the positive consequences of the colonialism, and Paqui has written the answers on the blackboard.

Positive consequences of colonialism were:

  • The introduction of some advances and technology in agriculture and industry.
  • Hygiene habits, advances in medicine (hospitals, vaccines…) Mortality decreased.
  • They built schools and illiteracy decreased.
  • Construction of infrastructures and facilities.

Raquel and Laura have corrected the negative consequences of the colonialism and Paqui has written the answers on the blackboard.

The negative consequences of the colonialism were:

  • These advances were introduced looking for the colonists benefits: plantations, exploitation of raw materials, control of the development of local industries.
  • All the innovations were introduced to facilitate business and not for the benefits of the population
  • With the population growth balance between population and resources broke up and famines started.
  • Acculturation process it was an imposition of the culture of the colonists (language, religion, habits…) and relegation of local cultures (considered to be inferior).

  • Traditional economy  was destroyed. Before the colonization there was a different way of organizing the work (collective exploitation of land and inexistence of the private property) was replaced by a monentary and capitalist economic system.

  • And Unequal and segregated society

Then we have come to a conclusion: It had more negative  than positive consequences for the colonized peoples.

So, Paqui has proposed us a project instead of exam of the next unit.
After I write my journal in the blog Paqui will be put a new post with the new Power Point presentations from which we have to choose three paintings.
And if we make a good comment of the painting, we won´t have to take an exam of unit 7. But if we copy it from the Wikipedia and we use the translator, we´ll fail and we´ll have to take an exam of whole unit.

Paqui has said that the next day we have to decide on the date of the exam!

And like every day we have added to the glossary these new words.

Coveted: codiciado

Opium: Opio

Boxer Rebellion: Rebelión de los bóxes

Facility: instalación (False friend)

Famine: hambrunas

Apartheid: Apartheid --> Division of the country into different groups of people with different rights, (Ex: there were schools for white and black people etc…)

 I hope you have enjoyed my journal

See you tomorrow!! :)

  1. Hello Gema,
    I suppose your journal is good because I didn't go to the class, but you have some mistakes:
    I step-->In step
    things of China-->things about China
    it because--> it is because
    after finish-->after finishing
    on yesterday-->yesterday
    de unit-->the unit
    will be put-->will put
    tree-->three
    It's a very good journal, see you!!

  2. Hi Gema !!

    Your journal is very good but I have found one mistake:

    You have to put the links of the photos.
    And who is Jose Javier Morales? hahahahahhaha
    Byeeeee :))

  3. Hi Gema,

    Your journal is good. I have found some mistakes:
    -Angel Manuel -> Ángel Manuel.
    -Jesus Ignacio -> Jesús Ignacio.
    -Fernando Garcia -> Fernando García.
    -in the blackboard -> on the blackboard. You have written it two times.

    John Bull is the personification of the United Kingdom. If you want to include something about him, there is an article on the Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bull

    If you want to add more things, include something about the Apartheid in South Africa.

    My opinion about a Republic in Spain is that a Republic (like the French Republic) won't change almost anything. It won't bring prosperity. I don't like the people who discuss about these things because the nationalist people and the people who want to remove the crown are very similar. I think some republicans defend the Republic because they lost a war and they want to win it now and this shouldn't be the reason to change into a Republic. I'm in favour of the historical memory but this is another topic. A parlamentary Monarchy and a parlamentary Republic have positive and negative aspects. I prefer a Republic but now there are most important aspects to discuss.

    See you and be careful with the names of your classmates!

  4. Hi gema!!
    I think your journal is very well and complete. When you say that enrique has arrived quickly, you have to say enrique perez because we are two. And I have found one mistake, you have to say "the origin of uncle Sam is US, he is related to military". And that's all. Good week bye bye.

  5. Hello Gema! The classmates have said you all the mistakes. I have found another one:
    -I have said that on yesterday it was the day of the Republic --> I have said that yesterday was the Republic Day.
    Doing a project in step of an exam is related with the next unit, not with this one. Write clear things because then we confuse the things and Paqui gets angry !
    Good journal Gema, next day it's my turn... :S Bye bye :))

  6. Hello!
    Your journal is very good. I agree with your classmates. You also have to write the links of the photos.
    In general is Ok.
    The most think that I like of the class was when Paqui said us that we can do a project of the next UNIT.
    Bye.

  10. Hi everybody,

    Corrections nobody has made:

    - Everybody has been late

    - You could add a link to explain the origin of the character of the Uncle Sam. Here you have one: http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/united-states-nicknamed-uncle-sam

    - Javi Morales, who never shuts up

    - Boxers’ rebellion , instead of uprising. There is a mistake on the book

    - Fernando is pig-headed late

    - Word oder: why Spain was sleeping in that period

    - Boxers’ rebellion

    - After finishing with China

    - Yesterday was the day of the Republic… hasn’t wanted to give an opinion

    - Written the answers on the blackboard

    - colonists

    - Traditional economy was destroyed. Before the colonization there was a different way…

    - more negative than positive consequences

    - We have finished the unit!

    - instead of an exam

    - PowerPoint presentations, from which we have to choose three paintings

    - We won’t have to take an exam of Unit 7
    - we’ll fail and we’ll have to take the exam of the whole unit Add this, because it has to be clear.

    - Rebelión de los bóxers

    - The definition of apartheid: it was a system in South Africa which divided the country into different…

    And finally, I don't agree with you, Gema: this is a very good place to discuss about different topics and express opinions, because if you have to write, you have to think first and this is the best activity someone can do with his/her brain.
    The discussion about monarchy or republic is very interesting and I would like to say some things, answering to Salva’s comment:

    I don’t think the main reason to defend a republic in Spain is that the republicans lost the war. This is hot news now not because the republicans are trying to go back to 1936, but due to the monarchy’s loss of prestige. There were also republicans among those who won the war. The people who prefer a republic want to choose the head of the State and have the power of removing him /her (let’s be optimistic, girls) if they don’t do their work or take advantage of their situation to become richer or use their influences to favour their families or friends. There are conservative people who prefer a republic and in fact there are many conservative republics around us now (Germany or Russia, for example). Monarchies are something contradictory with human rights (all people are equal) and with what is written in the Constitutions. Republics have an advantage: the possibility of choosing the head of the State and controlling his/her powers. This is more democratic.
    What many people like of the 2nd Republic in Spain is that it was the beginning of a new era with a lot of hopes for the people. Many things were done in some years and that’s why many people are nostalgic of those possibilities the military coup d’ État, the war and Franco’s dictatorship destroyed. Here you have a link to the special edition Público made in the 80th anniversary of the 2nd Republic:
    http://www.publico.es/especial/republica-80-aniversario/

    Yes, there are many other problems to solve now, but the debate about monarchy or republic in Spain is one of the evidences of the disadvantages of a monarchy and how several members of the royal family have used their privileges to be richer, make business and waste the money we pay them.

    Good night!

  11. One last thing. Here you have a humoristic and at the same time terrific science fiction text about the establishment of a republic in Spain in 2014:

  14. Hi! I have just corrected my journal, because first Paqui has a lot of things to do and she can´t do it before and second because I´m ill and I can´t do nothing!
    So, Paqui I agree with your opinion of the republic and the monarchy.
    And also I don´t like that we are paying a lot of money and they have a lot of privileges with our money, so I that if there are a monarchy they can do something and also with less money.

  15. Hello,

    These are my last corrections and sorry for the delay, but I'm terrbly busy:

    - The origin of uncle Sam comes from the acronym U.S. and is related to the military. Instead of saying that they received parcels from the (by) the government they said by the Uncle Sam.

    - Enrique Pérez has asked why in this period Spain was sleeping (in that period). Paqui has said that (it) because (after)before Spain was a big Empire, but (the Empire) the country had a lot of internal problems...

    - there is a film about the Boxers’ Rebellion called 55 days at Beijing.

    - Fernando García

    - and not for the benefit of the population

    - No commas here: collective exploitation of land and inexistence of

    - replaced by a monetary and capitalist economic

    - It had more negative than positive consequences for the colonized peoples.

    - the next day we have to decide on the date of the exam

    That's all. See you!
