Presentation of Unit 4 and new project suggestion

This is the presentation we are going to use for this unit:

My suggestion for a new project is the following:

Write a small book with the story of a family of workers who live the industrial revolutions, the development of industrial capitalism, the new class-based society and the origins of the labour movement. Here you have some guidelines:

- The members of the family must be at least three: one who lived at the end of the 18th century, one who lived in the first half of the 19th century and one who lived in the 2nd half of the 19th century:

  • The first character should live the 1st Industrial Revolution: the demographic and agricultural revolution, migration to cities, the beginning of factory system, the development of the textile and iron and steel industries, the first innovations of transport revolution, the first workers' protests (Luddism, the appearance of class consciousness, mutual benefit societies and the first trade unions).
  • The second character should live the changes which led to the 2nd Industrial Revolution and explain the following content: the development of industrial capitalism, the new industries and new ways of organizing work and the new industrial concentrations and the development of the class-based society. As for the labour movement, this character should read about Utopian socialism or participate in New Lanark, New Harmony or the phalanstères and participate in the Chartist movement.
  • The third character should tell about the consequences of the industrial revolutions, learn about the Marxist and anarchist ideas, choose one of these alternatives, take active part in the fight of the improvement of workers conditions and explain about International Workingmen's Association and its two stages.

- The story should start in the countryside in Great Britain. Later your characters can travel or settle down in different places, but you have to be careful and keep historical accuracy. Here you have some timelines to keep historical accuracy in what you write:

History of the Trade Unions in the United Kingdom: a very complete website. If you click on the different parts of the timeline, you will get a lot of information about strilkes, campaigns, workers' demands...:

http://www.unionhistory.info/timeline/timeline.php

Timeline on Labour: it includes information of both the United Kingdom and the USA:

http://timelines.ws/subjects/Labor.HTML

A beginners' guide to the history of the British trade union and working class movements: It includes a summary of the most important keystones of the British labour movement:

http://www.grahamstevenson.me.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=690&Itemid=52

History of the socialist movement in  the United Kingdom: an article from the British Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_socialist_movement_in_the_United_Kingdom

- As the story has to take place in the United Kingdom, here you have some maps to locate your story:

Source: http://websupport1.citytech.cuny.edu/faculty/pcatapano/WC2/wc2maps/16e_Map_19.02.jpg

As a suggestion, your first character could emigrate from the countryside to Manchester, to work in a textile factory, or Sheffield, to work in an iron and steel factory. Your third character could work in  a metalworking  factory in Sheffield or emigrate to Liverpool and work in the shipyards.

- As the story will have to be written on a family book during the 19th century, remember that the sheets of your book should look old. Here you have a video that explains how to age the paper

- And here you have some videos about how to make a book

- The project should include drawings or pictures of what you are explaining. Drawings are more original, but as photography was invented in the 19th century, you can include some pictures in the last part of the story.

The deadline for this project will be the 7th of March.  Those who fail the project or prefer to take the exam will do it during that week.

Presentation and family tree

Here you have the presentation about the Hispanic Momarchy during the 16th and 17th centuries:

And this is the family tree of the Hispanic Monarchs, starting from the Catholic Monarchs until Philip V. As you can see, endogamous relations were common, in orede to preserve alliances. There were cases of: marriages:

- between cousins, like the one of the Catholic Monarchs (both belonged to the Trastámara dynasty) or Charles I and Isabella of Portugal.

-  between aunts and nephews, like the one between Philip II and his aunt Mary Tudor (Catherine of Aragón and Henry VIII's daughter)

-  between uncles and nieces, like the one between Philip II and Anna of Austria or the one between Philip IV and Mariana of Austria.

Everything was allowed for the continuation of the dynasty, but this inbreeding had seroius consequences, with handicaped children. Charles II, a disabled monarch, was the culmination of this marriage policy.

Thursday, 26th of March 2015

Hello classmates!!!

Today, in our lesson of Social Sciences, we've done many things:

-Firstly, Paqui has shown us the Art Project of the 18th and 19th Centuries that Dani Carmona, a partner from 1st of Bachillerato, made last year. On the project, he talked about Imperialism and Historicism. Also, Paqui has explained us how he made it: he made the project with a croma, a green background and then he put images of the paintings behind him. She has told us that doing it isn't difficult. I wanted to include the video but I can't find his channel on YouTube :(

-After this, Paqui has shown us different examples of Travel Journals, which is what we have to do for our projects of Art of the 18th & 19th Centuries. I think it's original and an interesting way of developing our creativity. There are some very original projects, and more or less I have an idea of how mine is going to be.

-Later we have talked about Goya: Paqui has explained us, with a presentation that he was a painter
between two periods: he was between Classicism and Modernity. He was born in Fuendetodos, Zaragoza in 1746. He moved to Madrid in 1775 and started working for the Royal Tapestry Factory. His style was luminous and colorist. In this same year, he became court painter. In 1792 he suffered a serious illness and became deaf. The deafness completely changed his personality: his painting turned more critical. He painted a series of Etchings that included Fantasies and Bullfighting. When Ferdinand VII came back, his ideas about Joseph I put him in trouble. He lost his job and became isolated. He painted the Black Paintings on the walls of his house. In 1823 he exiled to France and died there in 1828.

Here are some famous paintings by Goya:

Instructions for the projects about Spain's history

Cartoon about the Abdications of Bayonne

Here you have the information you will need for the projects about the history of Spain in the 19thcentury:

Deadline: 23rd February. You will have five weeks to prepare your projects.

Topic: the different periods of the Spanish history during the 1st half of the 19th century:

- Charles IV's reign and the Peninsular War (1788-1814)
- Ferdinand VII´s reign  and the regencies (1814-1843)
- Isabella II´s reign (1843-1868)

The project will consist of preparing either a comic strip of at least four pages or a short video (not more than 10 minutes) and explaining the main facts of every historical period.

The project will have to include some basic parts:
- An introduction
- The main figures of every period
- Main facts
- A conclusion with the most important concepts
- New vocabulary appeared on the project and its meaning.

The explanation has to be didactic: clear and easy to understand. The more visual your project is, the better.

If you choose the video option, you can make your drawings on paper, on a whiteboard or you can make Plasticine puppets. Here you have some examples of what you could do:

- Paper drawings:

- Whiteboard drawings:

- Plasticine puppets:

If you film a video, you will have to upload it to the Youtube account I will provide you. I will send you the password by e-mail when you´re ready to upload your work.

Organization: groups of two or three students. You will have to make sure that every member of the group works. If you film a video, all members will have to speak. If you make a comic strip, all the members of the group will have to explain their project in class.

Sources of information: the text book and the PowerPoint presentations we use in class can be a good starting point. You can also use Internet sources of books of History, but remember that they have to be trustworthy.

Useful advice:

Although design is a decisive part of this project, don´t forget that content is the most important thing. That´s why you should start preparing a good scheme of the period and an outline of the different parts you are going to develop.

After this, you should research on the historical period you have to work on: the physical aspect of the most important figures, anecdotes, satirical newspapers and magazines of that time.

When you have all the information you need, it will be time to write the script of what you´re going to say/write. You can send me the script to check grammar or correct mistakes before the 13th February.

Finally, you should start preparing the material part of the project.

Assessment: I will take different aspects into account:

-  historical accuracy of the contents
-  clarity in the development of the ideas
-  creativity and originality.

A good project should include all these requirements. When you finish your projects, you will have to fill an assessment sheet, to give a mark to every member of the group. Remember that, if you fail the project, you will have to take an exam of the whole content, not only the part you´ve worked on.

Remember: don't copy from other students. Be original and use your imagination. You can also write one or several songs, as the history teacher we saw in class, or prepare a theater play.

Here you have the presentations to prepare the content:
